Movie: Cold Skin
In 1914, a young Englishman embarks on a journey to a secluded island in the South Atlantic to assume the role of a weather observer for a year. Upon arrival, it becomes apparent that the man he is replacing has gone missing. The island's sole inhabitant, Gruner, the caretaker of a rudimentary lighthouse, explains that the previous observer succumbed to typhus, potentially while swimming in the sea, with no trace of the body.
As the man explores the island, he stumbles upon peculiar rock circles on the beach and discovers the diary of the former meteorologist, filled with drawings of local wildlife, including enigmatic sea creatures. Disturbingly, he experiences nightly encounters with these creatures attempting to breach his cabin. In a misguided attempt to thwart them, he inadvertently sets his cabin ablaze.
While exploring further, the man encounters a female sea creature, and Gruner intervenes to prevent him from harming her, revealing that she is "tame" and obedient like a dog. Dubbing the man "Friend," Gruner agrees to let him stay in the lighthouse in exchange for supplies. Their nights become a routine of fending off the creatures and keeping watch. Friend develops a fondness for the captive female, Aneris, but refrains from intervening as Gruner subjects her to relentless physical and sexual abuse.
Friend speculates whether the creatures continuously attack the lighthouse to reclaim Aneris, who sings strange sounds at night. Gruner dismisses Friend's theories, asserting that the creatures lack higher sensibilities. Friend reflects on his initial quest for peace in nothingness as he witnesses the unfolding brutality.
The two men narrowly escape death during a creature onslaught, prompting Friend's attempt to signal a passing ship. In response, Gruner attacks him, revealing Aneris' protective instincts. A conversation ensues about Gruner's reluctance to be rescued, delving into questions of civility in society and the hidden evils within it.
Friend, seeking escape, carves a boat from whale bones, while Gruner initially dismisses the idea. However, after witnessing Friend with Aneris, Gruner changes his stance. They discover an abandoned boat from a Portuguese shipwreck containing dynamite, which becomes a potential means of escape.
During a perilous dive to retrieve dynamite, Gruner attempts to drown Friend, but he survives. The two form a plan to use the dynamite to repel the creatures from the lighthouse. The explosion kills many creatures and leaves Friend and Gruner unconscious.
In the aftermath, Gruner ruthlessly dispatches wounded creatures on the beach, while Friend contends that the creatures may have a more civilized nature. Aneris vanishes, leading to a night of eerie mourning sounds from the sea.
Discovering a photo of a younger Gruner with a wife, Friend questions Gruner's narrative of the island's unchanging nature. A present left for the creatures hints at Friend's changing perspective. Aneris returns, transformed and standing upright, signaling a shift in the creatures' demeanor.
However, Gruner, in a fit of rage, kills a child creature with a flare, triggering a confrontation. Friend confronts Gruner, revealing he knows Gruner's true identity as the previous meteorologist. Urging Gruner to remember love, Friend exposes the fallacy of Gruner's beliefs. Enlightened, Gruner faces his fate and is killed by the sea creatures.
Months later, as a new ship arrives, Friend assumes Gruner's identity, concealing his own transformation. The sea captain mistakes him for Gruner, unaware of the internal turmoil. Friend, tormented by the inhuman acts he committed, finds no solace in escaping the island. Aneris, witnessing the ship, embraces her newfound freedom and swims away from the island.
