Secret Intelligence Service Trains Young People to Use Their Minds And Bodies as Weapons

Movie: Red Sparrow

In contemporary Russia, the renowned ballerina Dominika Egorova faces a pivotal turning point when a career-ending injury befalls her. Struggling to support her ailing mother, she is approached by her uncle Ivan, a high-ranking official in the SVR. In a desperate bid to secure ongoing medical care for her mother, Dominika is tasked with seducing the Russian gangster Dimitry Ustinov. However, a horrific incident unfolds during their encounter when Ustinov is killed by Sergei Matorin, an SVR operative acting on Ivan's orders. Faced with a life-altering choice, Dominika must either become an SVR operative or face execution for witnessing the assassination.

On the other side of the covert spectrum, CIA operative Nate Nash operates in Moscow, navigating a dangerous espionage game. When confronted by the police during a meeting with a Russian mole named Marble, Nash engineers a diversion to safeguard his contact's identity. Reassigned to Budapest, Nash insists on being the only agent Marble will work with. Simultaneously, Dominika undergoes intense training as a "Sparrow" at State School 4, a school specializing in operatives skilled in seduction for intelligence purposes.

Dominika's skills catch the attention of Ivan and General Vladimir Korchnoi, who decide to deploy her to Budapest to gain Nash's trust and uncover Marble's identity. In Budapest, Dominika, living with fellow Sparrow Marta, establishes contact with Nash. Nash, however, discerns her true allegiance and endeavors to convince her to defect.

As Dominika juggles her mission, she discovers Marta's involvement in acquiring classified intelligence from Stephanie Boucher, a U.S. Senator's chief of staff. Facing pressure from Ivan and the SVR, Dominika claims to be aiding Marta, but tragedy strikes when Marta is brutally killed for learning about Dominika's past. Warned of a similar fate, Dominika reaches out to Nash, offering to become a double agent in exchange for protection for herself and her mother.

The plot intensifies as Dominika, under Russian orders, travels to London with SVR station chief Maxim Volontov to meet Boucher. She covertly replaces the intelligence with CIA-supplied disinformation, leading to a disastrous outcome for Boucher. Suspected of compromising the mission, Dominika and Volontov endure torture and interrogation in Moscow. Volontov meets a grim fate, but Dominika's innocence is eventually recognized by Ivan, who allows her to return to Budapest.

In a twist of events, Dominika reframes her allegiance, convincing Nash to relocate her and her mother to America. However, her world unravels when Nash is tortured for Marble's identity. Dominika, initially assisting in Nash's torment, turns the tables by killing Matorin. Severely injured, she wakes up in a hospital where Korchnoi reveals himself as Marble. He shares his disillusionment with the system and instructs Dominika to expose his identity to Ivan.

Rather than following Korchnoi's instructions, Dominika frames Ivan as the mole, using fabricated evidence since her arrival in Hungary. Ivan is killed during a prisoner exchange, and Dominika is hailed as a national hero, honored in a military ceremony upon her return to Russia.

In the aftermath, Dominika lives with her mother in Russia and receives a mysterious phone call playing Grieg's piano concerto—the piece she had shared with Nash during her first solo performance.
